Bringing Books to Life: How We Create 'Dorian’s Diaries' Soap
Share
There is something magical about blending the world of literature with the art of
soap making. At Angélique’s Apothecary, we love creating pieces that tell a story,
and our "Dorian’s Diaries" collection is the perfect example of that.
The Inspiration
The name "Dorian’s Diaries" was born out of a funny, flattering encounter with a friend who asked if I was following the "Dorian Gray" principle. I laughed and told her it was all thanks to my homemade tallow cream! Inspired by the literary connection, and the effectiveness of my simple tallow, coconut oil, and vitamin E blend, created a soap collection that felt just as timeless.
The Process: Painting the Details
Creating these soaps is a meditative process. It starts with a quality mold, but the
character comes from the hand-painted finish. Using a bronzy-gold mica powder
mixed with 91% rubbing alcohol, we paint the embossed pages and covers of each
little book.
The key, as I’ve learned, is to slow down. When I first started, rushing lead to
mistakes, but now it’s a craft I truly enjoy. The alcohol acts as a perfect vehicle for
the pigment, evaporating cleanly and leaving behind a beautiful, shimmery finish.
Why They Are Perfect for Bibliophiles
We call these books "Once Upon a Lather," and seeing people’s reactions at the
market, especially our local librarians, has been the highlight of this project.
They make the perfect gift for book lovers and look stunning displayed in a home
library.
If you have any favorite bookstores or libraries that would love a basket of these
soaps, let us know! We love connecting with fellow book enthusiasts.
