Anhydrous vs Emulsified (Water Based) Creams

Anhydrous vs Emulsified (Water Based) Creams

Anhydrous creams are made entirely of oils, butters, and waxes with no water at all. Because they don’t contain water, they’re naturally more stable, have a long shelf life, and usually don’t require preservatives. These products are rich, occlusive, and especially good for locking in moisture and protecting dry or sensitive skin.

Water-based creams, on the other hand, contain a mixture of oils and water (or ingredients that act like water—aloe, hydrosols, honey, glycerin, etc.). This makes them lighter, more lotion-like, and faster-absorbing. But because water allows bacteria, mold, and yeast to grow, water-based creams must include an emulsifier to keep the formula from separating, and a preservative to keep the product safe.

In short: anhydrous = oil only, naturally stable; water-based = lighter feel, but needs emulsifiers and preservatives.

We only make anhydrous creams, so there is no need for preservatives.
